Though at least slightly busier than last weekend, Arsenal’s loanees had another mixed Saturday this time around.
Last week, we highlighted a very quiet Saturday for Arsenal’s lower-league loanees, with Daniel Ballard the sole player to feature in an abnormally uneventful matchday.
This weekend brought a mild improvement on that front, with Matt Smith returning from suspension and Miguel Azeez stepping back out onto the pitch. But for the most part, it was much of the same.
First up on Saturday was actually Lucas Torreira over in Serie A, with the midfielder starting for Fiorentina against Empoli.
Torreira seemed to have a good game and left the field with his team 1-0 up in the 85th minute. Unfortunately, they then conceded twice in the next four minutes to lose the match.
Then it was onto the 3pm kick-offs, with Matt Smith and Daniel Ballard making their team’s starting lineups. But it was more bad news for the both of them, with Doncaster Rovers losing 2-0 and Millwall losing 2-1. They each at least completed 90 minutes.
One positive was Miguel Azeez, who came on for his first appearance in a few games as a late substitute for Portsmouth. His side then scored an injury-time winner, as Azeez played 26 minutes.
Up in Scotland at the same time, Harry Clarke started for Ross County against Dundee United. Luck wasn’t on his side either, as he picked up two yellow cards in 10 minutes to leave his side with 10 men.
The first was a particularly harsh yellow, as Clarke just seemed to run into an opponent he wasn’t looking at. But the second was more deserved, as he went in for a header leading with his arm.
You can watch the yellows at 1:20 and 1:45 in the highlights package here, and judge them for yourselves.
The one upside was that Ross County’s 10 men actually scored a goal after that to avoid defeat.
