A couple of weeks ago, after Marseille’s 4-1 victory over FC Lorient, William Saliba and Matteo Guendouzi were voted into the Ligue 1 fan Team of the Week. Guendouzi had scored one and assisted one on the night, whilst Saliba drew praise for his defensive display.

A week later, it was no surprise to see them both back in the Team of the Week again. Marseille had managed a draw and a clean sheet against Paris Saint-Germain, with Saliba earning particular praise for shutting down PSG’s mega-money forwards.

That brings us to today, with both Saliba and Guendouzi in the Team of the Week for a third time in a row.

This time around, the duo have actually played twice in the week. The rearranged Nice fixture took place last Wednesday, ending in a 1-1 draw, before a win over Clermont Foot on Sunday.

The Clermont Foot victory is likely what earned the two Arsenal loanees the votes. It was a 1-0 win, meaning another clean sheet for Saliba, and Guendouzi assisted the winning goal.

We’ll see how long the two of them can keep the run going, but they’re certainly impressing Ligue 1 fans right now!

Recent reports suggest Saliba is planning to return to Arsenal and prove himself next summer. That’s his ‘expectation’ and ‘desire’ as things stand, and he’s taking steps to try and make it happen.

Most notably, the centre-back is about to begin a new course of English lessons to develop his speaking. He also remains in contact with his Arsenal teammates.
