With just over 10 minutes remaining of Marseille’s clash with Galatasaray on Thursday, Matteo Guendouzi went down in the area following a challenge from Patrick van Aanholt and the referee awarded a penalty.

Plenty of arguments ensued while the VAR check went on, before Guendouzi was angered by the decision to overturn the call. He confronted van Aanholt and they exchanged angry words, but nothing else came of it until after the game.

Writing on Twitter afterwards, van Aanholt said: “Running your mouth after VAR proved you wrong… likkleman needs to relax before I snatch that wig off your head”

In terms of the actual incident, it’s fair to say the initial penalty call was soft. Whilst there seemed to be some contact between the players’ upper legs, it looked to be initiated by Guendouzi as much as van Aanholt and it was still minimal.

Arsenal fans will already be well aware of the way Guendouzi tries to win fouls, and this was another such instance. But it wasn’t a dive, so overturning the decision and not booking Guendouzi was probably the right call.

Guendouzi has been making some headlines in France lately, after arguing with a teammate and a report from Foot Radio that he’s growing unpopular with certain sections of the dressing room. But he was still called up by France, so it’s not all bad news.
