Konstantinos Mavropanos made the SofaScore Team of the Week this week with a strong display as VfB Stuttgart rescued a point.

Arsenal loanee Konstantinos Mavropanos earned another start for Stuttgart on Sunday, facing off against Union Berlin in a Bundesliga home game.

The 23-year-old has been in bizarrely strong goalscoring form in recent matches, with four goals since joining on loan this summer. But it was his defensive output that was crucial this weekend, winning him a spot in SofaScore’s Team of the Week.

Though SofaScore have put him in the team in the right-back position, Mavropanos was technically playing right-centre-back in a back-three.

Stuttgart went 1-0 down in the first half, and their task got twice as difficult after Atakan Karazor was sent off. But Mavropanos and the rest of the defence held firm until the 93rd minute, when Wahid Faghir won them a point with a late equaliser.

With Stuttgart performing poorly this season so far, that point could be crucial later on. They’re currently only four points clear of the relegation play-off place after nine games, and five points clear of the automatic relegation spots.

Mavropanos made seven clearances, five interceptions, two tackles, and blocked two shots to help his team, as well as winning nine of his 11 individual duels.

It looks like Stuttgart are going to need him in this form if they’re going to pull clear of the relegation battle. For now, they get a break from the league action to face FC Koln in the DFB Pokal (the German domestic cup) on Wednesday night.
