Arsenal were heavily linked with a move for Ajax’s Andre Onana and the player could be set for a free move that would suit Arsenal nicely.
Arsenal were clearly looking for a goalkeeper this summer, a fact borne out by them buying Arron Ramsdale. While Arsenal had no number two at the club, Ramsdale’s fee shocked/annoyed many.
Ramsdale has been brought to Arsenal to be the club’s number on keeper next season when Bernd Leno leaves on a free. That makes his fee a little more understandable. That will also leave Arsenal back in the same situation they were in this summer, unless Arthur Okonkwo does something spectacular.
Enter Andre Onana.
The Ajax keeper is out of contract next summer and the Dutch side could try and shift him in January. However, as he will be a free agent a few months after that, Onana could agree a pre-transfer with a foreign club.
Arsenal are foreign.
When asked about Onana’s contract being renewed, Ajax’s director of football, Marc Overmars, told Ajax TV, “You never know in football, but the way I see it now, I don’t see that happening anytime soon.
“It is possible that he will leave in the winter, but that must yield a decent amount. It must go both ways. If the amount is not sufficient, then [he will leave] in July for nothing.”
This is all speculation on my part but an Arsenal move would make sense, for the club at least. Despite his doping ban, Arsenal were very interested in signing the 25-year-old whose price depended on the status of his ban. Free is even better than cheap, especially for Arsenal.
Whatever happens, with Onana refusing to sign a new contract at Ajax and Bernd Leno not even being offered one at Arsenal, a keeper will be top of Arsneal’s shopping list once again very soon.
