David Ornstein reports that Takehiro Tomiyasu is undergoing a medical in Bologna ahead of a £16m move to Arsenal on a four-year deal. Everything is agreed, the deal simply depends on the outcome of the medical and Arsenal’s outgoings.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Arsenal have reached an agreement with Bologna to sign Tomiyasu, with personal terms sorted and the Serie A side to receive €20m (£17m) plus €3m in potential add-ons. So there’s a slight dispute over the price, but nothing major.

Mike McGrath of The Telegraph had reported earlier that Tomiyasu would hold his medical in Italy ahead of the move. Arsenal flew out a doctor from their medical department this afternoon to complete the necessary procedures ahead of the transfer confirmation.

This all follows David Ornstein’s initial exclusive report confirming Arsenal were working on a deal to sign the Bologna defender on deadline day.

At the time, Ornstein added that a deal does depend on other player movements – likely departures in the right-back position. Hopefully, the fact it’s now progressing so quickly means that those other moves are close to completion too.

We’re still obviously set for a bit of a race against time to get the deal done and announced. But it looks as if Arsenal have landed their man.

Arsenal believe Tomiyasu is a good fit for their system as he’s comfortable playing right-back and centre-back. As a result, he can play on the right-hand side in a back four, but also in the right of a three.

As well as playing for Bologna, 22-year-old Tomiyasu is also a Japan international. He’s already made 23 senior international appearances and he featured for their Olympic team over the summer as they reached the semi-finals.
