In recent days, we covered reports from the Netherlands that Reiss Nelson was edging towards a loan to Feyenoord for the season, after the Dutch club’s move for Amad Diallo fell through when the Manchester United youngster picked up an injury.

James Benge confirmed the reports, adding that Nelson would first presumably need to sign the extension Arsenal have been pushing him to sign all summer. Otherwise, his Arsenal deal would be up in 2022, at the end of the loan.

Football.London then reported that the deal was done, and that Nelson would indeed extend his contract.

Dharmesh Sheth and Fabrizio Romano have since added that Nelson will sign a one-year extension with Arsenal to 2023 before completing the loan. He travelled to the Netherlands on Monday evening.

Essentially, it seems Arsenal and Nelson are pushing back a long-term decision on his future to next summer. If he impresses, perhaps he can find his way back into the Arsenal team and extend his deal again. If not, or if the club can’t find a role for him, they can sell him then.
