Jeorge Bird reports that young Arsenal midfielder Mathaeus Roberts is in the Wales u18 squad to face England next month. The young Welsh side are set to play a friendly against England on Friday, 3rd September at 13:00 BST.

The u18 call-up is the next step in Roberts’ development with his national side, having previously played at u17 and u16 level with Wales in the last couple of years.

Roberts didn’t feature in Arsenal’s u18 opening day win over Aston Villa, making the bench, but he did score from a clever free-kick routine in pre-season.

The youngster technically made his u18 debut for the Gunners last season, but it was in a game against Reading where both teams agreed to field younger sides. Nonetheless, he performed well and provided an assist in the 6-1 win that day.

It’s now very possible the teenager makes his first competitive appearance of the season at u18 level for his country, rather than his club. Arsenal do have a couple more u18 games before the international break, facing West Brom on August 21st and Brighton on August 28th.
