Gabriel Magalhaes and Gabriel Martinelli have been called up for the Brazil u23s later this month, ahead of the Olympic games later this summer.

On Friday, Brazil announced the 23 players called up for the international break at the end of the month, between May 31st and June 8th. Both Gabriel Magalhaes and Gabriel Martinelli featured on the list.

For the time being, no fixtures have been announced between the two dates, although that could change. The CBF website write that the schedule for the June break will be revealed as soon as possible.

Either way, the primary purpose of the call-up is to prepare the squad for the Olympic Games later in the summer.

As a result, we have to assume both Gabriel and Martinelli will be called up for the Olympics as well. It’s not guaranteed, but it’s extremely likely now.

Brazil kick off the Olympics with a game against Germany on July 22nd, before facing Ivory Coast on July 25th and Saudi Arabia on July 28th. The final doesn’t take place until August 7th.

This obviously has implications for both players at Arsenal. The new Premier League season kicks off on August 14th, so the two Gabriels will struggle to be available for the early stages of the club season – particularly depending on when they take their holiday.

On a positive note, it’s always good to see Arsenal players getting recognised by their countries, and Martinelli and Gabriel will hope their u23 performances lead to senior call-ups down the road.
