Fabrizio Romano reports that Dani Ceballos will leave Arsenal after his loan spell, as one of many summer departures. There’s no chance he’ll remain with the Gunners, he’s returning to Spain.

As for the midfielder’s next steps, Real Madrid are reportedly open to selling him on a permanent deal. They’re waiting to see what offers they get this summer. But it won’t be to Arsenal.

This tallies with a number of other reports on the subject, so there’s little doubt at this stage.

Ceballos made just under 80 appearances for Arsenal in two seasons, joining under Unai Emery but playing most of his football with Mikel Arteta in charge.

There were some good moments, primarily the FA Cup win where Ceballos scored the winning goal in the quarter-final before starting both the semi-final and final. But it all ended on a sour note after his disastrous Europa League knockout stage showings this year.

Ceballos conceded a free-kick leading to a goal against Benfica, before gifting them a goal in the second leg as well. He lost possession to hand Olympiacos an equaliser, then got sent off against Villarreal. That’s three of the four ties Arsenal played.

Unfortunately, that was fractured the relationship the Spaniard previously had with the fans. From Ceballos’ side, he’ll also feel disappointed with Arsenal for seemingly failing to help him into the Spain squad for the Euros.

So the loan is ending on a negative, but we wish Ceballos well with his next move.
