Aaron Benn is one of the players Arsenal are letting go this summer, despite a brace in his only u18 appearance against Reading.

Arsenal Youth report that the day after scoring a brace for the Arsenal u18s against Reading earlier this month, 16-year-old Aaron Benn was told he was being released by the club. That game was his debut at u18 level.

Though the news sounds a bit bizarre on the face of it, there are some mitigating factors.

Firstly, the game against Reading wasn’t a normal u18 game. Both sides had agreed to play younger teams, so we can’t read too much into the result that day. Secondly, Benn has had injury problems this season affecting his campaign.

Then there’s the fact that Arsenal are close to the limit in terms of the number of u18s they’re allowed, so they have to make some tough choices.

Still, it’s always a shame to see a young player moving on right when they’re scoring goals. Especially one who has been at Arsenal since he was just a child.
