Tyreece John-Jules spent three months on the sidelines with a serious hamstring injury earlier this year, only returning to the pitch last week.

Arsenal had requested that Doncaster Rovers play John-Jules for no longer than 30 minutes in his first two appearances back in action, to ensure they minimised the risk of reinjury. In both cases, Rovers introduced him as soon as possible.

On Tuesday, John-Jules came on in the 63rd minute against Accrington Stanley, 1-0 down, and it didn’t take long for him to find an equaliser for his team.

Holding up the ball well to find Fejiri Okenabirhie, the Arsenal loan striker then turned away from his man and drove a shot into the bottom corner of the net.

John-Jules had another good chance a few minutes later, but the goalkeeper got out well to smother his shot.

Unfortunately, Rovers then conceded a late goal in a completely unnecessary fashion. Their goalkeeper dropped a shot that was straight at him, before fouling an Accrington Stanley man in his attempts to recover it. The hosts scored the resulting penalty.

A heartbreaking result in the circumstances, but John-Jules is back on the scoresheet and hopefully available to start from now on.

“Tyreece came on and made an impact, he got his goal and was unfortunate not to have another one just after that,” Rovers boss Andy Butler said.

“We’re still managing his minutes due to the nature of his injury but he’s shown what he’s capable of from the bench. He provides a threat and knows where the back of the net is, which gives the opposition something else to think about.”
