David Luiz was absent from Arsenal’s latest debacle, this time against Liverpool (again) after picking up a problem in his right knee.

Speaking about Luiz, Mikel Arteta said after the game, “We don’t know [if he will require surgery].

“There a few possibilities on that, being a little more conservative with the treatment or having to go for a surgery. We are talking with the doctors at the moment to make the right decision on that but we’ll see. He could be out for a few weeks at least.

“I don’t know [if he will play again this season]. It will depend what the decision we take is. If it’s more conservative, it will be short-term. If it’s a bit more radical with what he needs, it will take longer.”

Despite those comments, Luiz underwent a procedure on Easter Sunday morning and it’s unclear how long he will be out for. ‘Upcoming weeks’, as stated by Arsenal means nothing and has been used when the club have been talking about one week, two weeks and a couple of months.

It’s worth remembering at this point that there are only six weeks of the season remaining.

Knee injuries have been an issue for David Luiz a few times throughout his career.

He missed three games while a PSG player because of his knee while at Chelsea he missed a total of 20 across two different knee injuries, although they don’t seem to have given him any bother since the 17/18 season.

Since joining Arsenal at the start of last season Luiz has missed a total of 10 games, including the Liverpool match. He has suffered a head injury, a ‘knock’ a hamstring problem, illness and now this latest knee injury.

David Luiz is out of contract in the summer.
