Schalke may have got themselves a new manager but it doesn’t seem to have provided any new-manager bounce with the Germans going down 5-0 and Shkodran Mustafi opening the floodgates for their opponents.

Schalke are rooted to the foot of the Bundesliga, now nine points adrift of Arminia in 17th place and 11 from safety.

It’s safe to say this hasn’t been a great season.

If they had hoped signing Sead Kolasinac on loan from Arsenal and Shkodran Mustafi on a permanent deal, at least until the summer, would help, that’s not exactly gone to plan with the Arsenal men blamed for helping to oust Christian Gross as head coach.

Against Wolfsburg on Saturday, Schalke lost 5-0 and it was Mustafi who helped them on their way with this lovely placed header past his own keeper:

He also played a hand in their third goal when he made another mistake in the box, leaving him with the lowest rating of any Bundesliga player all season (4.18) just a week after picking up the highest (8.76).

That’s quite the stat when you consider Schalke have played 25 games and, in total, there have been approximately 5,800 performances so far in the division that Mustafi had to underperform.

It took him just five matches.
