After sitting on the bench for Egypt’s opening match of the international break, Mohamed Elneny got his chance in the starting lineup against Comoros on Monday.

It didn’t take long for the Arsenal midfielder to have an impact, as he scored a great goal in the 15th minute. Picking up the ball on the edge of the box, Elneny curled into the far corner beyond the diving goalkeeper.

Comoros had only conceded two goals in five AFCON qualification matches until then, and they kept a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw against Egypt last time out. But Elneny opened the floodgates for a 4-0 victory on this occasion to comfortably top the group.

Later in the match, Egypt captain Amr El Solia was substituted, putting Elneny in line for the captaincy. However, Elneny requested that they hand it over to Mohamed Salah instead, so his teammate could wear the armband for the first time.

With his recent goals and kind gestures, Elneny is certainly proving a popular figure at the moment.
