Mesut Özil picked up an injury in his most recent appearance for Fenerbahce after going over on his ankle late in the game.

Making his fourth start and seventh appearance for Fenerbahce since joining in the winter window, Mesut Özil was pushing to help his side find an equaliser when he went down awkwardly under a challenge from Antalyaspor forward Fredy.

According to the player himself, he has an outer ligament tear in his ankle. Goal add that he specifically has partial tears to his inner and outer lateral ankle ligaments and will miss between four and six weeks of football. April 5th is the best-case return date.

This is a major blow to Fenerbahce, who are pushing for the Super Lig title. In recent matches, they’ve fallen behind Besiktas and Galatasaray, and they’ll have to close the gap without Özil’s help now.

It’s also a blow to Özil, of course. He’s yet to get going with his new club, with no goals or assists yet and mixed results for the team in his seven appearances (three wins, one draw, three defeats).

All he can do for now is work on his recovery and support his teammates from the sidelines.
