Marcelo Flores could have joined up with the Mexican u20 national team over the current break if not for injury, according to a report.

Arsenal youngster Marcelo Flores remains at the centre of a battle between Mexico and Canada for his international allegiance. According to ESPN, Mexico made the most recent attempt to call-up the 17-year-old – to their u20s for the current break.

Unfortunately, for both the player and the team, Flores wasn’t quite fit to feature. He’s still easing his way back to full fitness following an injury.

This news comes just weeks after Canada u23 coach Mauro Biello admitted they’re trying to prise him away from their competition.

Biello told the media Flores was a player they’d been looking at and would “love to have” in their group. He insisted they’re keen on bringing him across to their side and that there will be chances for him to play if he wants them.

Flores was also invited to a senior Canada Men’s National Team camp in January, although since January isn’t one of FIFA’s international windows, the camp was only for players at clubs that weren’t in action at the time (MLS, youth teams, etc.).

It seems this battle is set to continue until Flores makes a firm call on his future, which could be a while yet.
