Lucas Torreira is happy to return to Arsenal for next season, but only if he believes he’s going to get chances to play, according to reports.

The Athletic report that they understand Lucas Torreira would happily return to the Emirates Stadium for the 2021/22 campaign, but he wants assurances over his game-time first.

This season will have played a part in making the midfielder feel a bit restless. We’ve covered before that he’s struggling to get games under Diego Simeone, and that hasn’t changed as the months have gone by.

In fact, March was the worst month of the season so far for the 25-year-old. It was the first time all season that he hasn’t even played 20 minutes of football in all competitions through a full month. The Athletic claim his camp are baffled by his lack of opportunities.

With Atletico still sitting top of La Liga right now, you can understand why Torreira’s minutes aren’t their primary consideration right now. But regardless of the reasoning behind Simeone’s treatment of him, he needs to play more next year.

For the record, it seems Torreira is also willing to return to Atletico if his situation changes before the end of the season. There was also interest in him from Italy and Spain in the January transfer window. So it seems like there will be options available.
