Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness) report that Fiorentina are planning to buy one great player in each department of the pitch, and Lucas Torreira is the man they’ve selected for their midfield.

They’re reportedly ‘well ahead in talks with Arsenal’ for the player, who has already confirmed he’s willing to make a Serie A comeback with Fiorentina.

Torreira is currently on loan with Atletico Madrid, where he’s making plenty of appearances (at least since the turn of the year) but very few starts.

Diego Simeone prefers to bring the 25-year-old on late, using him as a substitute in nine of his last 10 La Liga appearances. The one start only lasted until half-time, when he was taken off.

Even though Torreira decided to stick with Atletico until the end of the season, it seems unlikely he’ll make the move permanent this summer.

If he’s not starting games, it’s not really any different from the time he spent in North London. If he wanted to leave Arsenal for starts, it wouldn’t make much sense to rejoin a club not giving him any.

So that opens up other avenues, including the likes of Fiorentina. Arsenal might even consider keeping him, depending on what else they do with their current midfield options, but an exit is certainly on the table.
