Arsenal are planning to assess the situations of loan signings Mat Ryan and Martin Odegaard this summer, with a view to possible permanent deals.

Arsenal’s two senior January signings Mat Ryan and Martin Odegaard are only initially on loan, but it seems the club plan to reassess both situations in the summer.

Speaking in his press conference on Monday, Mikel Arteta insisted Ryan is only on a loan deal for now, but they’ll see what happens in the coming months.

“At the moment it’s just a loan deal,” Arteta said. “He still has a contract with Brighton and we will assess it. See how he performs, how he adapts, what we need in the future. We still have to decide that.”

As for Odegaard, Fabrizio Romano and various Spanish outlets report that Real Madrid and Arsenal will hold talks at the end of the season to discuss his future – along with Dani Ceballos’ situation. Again, Odegaard’s transfer is a simple loan deal for now.

It was a similar situation last January, when Arsenal signed Pablo Mari and Cedric Soares on loan before making both deals permanent in the summer.

The difference was that both of them had options in their contracts to make the moves permanent. Neither Ryan nor Odegaard have those options, so Arsenal will need to renegotiate in June. Whether they actually want to do so will depend on the next few months.
