Sokratis Papastathopoulos is leaning towards choosing a return to Genoa over his other January options, according to a report.

Sky Sport Italia (via Daily Mail) report that Sokratis would much prefer a move to Genoa over the likes of Fenerbahce, assuming the terms on offer from both clubs are roughly similar. The centre-back is reportedly ‘nearing the end’ at Arsenal now.

TMW and Chris Wheatley recently confirmed that Genoa were one of several clubs to make contact with Sokratis in recent days. At that point, the defender was yet to make a decision and was assessing his options, but it looks like he’s edging closer now.

Francesco Porzio also backed up the story, writing that Genoa and Arsenal are in talks. Fabrizio Romano claimed Genoa and Fenerbahce had both asked for the player, and he’ll soon decide his next destination.

Di Marzio added that Genoa want to hand the defender a two-and-a-half-year contract.

Sokratis has been playing with the Arsenal youth teams recently to keep himself sharp for a January move.
