David Raya and Freddie Woodman are both on the list of potential summer signings in the goalkeeper position for Arsenal this summer.

Earlier this week, Arsenal completed the loan signing of Mat Ryan from Brighton, but that only solves the issue with the goalkeeper position for the short term.

Arsenal may well decide to put in a permanent bid this summer, but that will likely depend on performances between now and then. If they choose not to, it appears David Raya and Freddie Woodman are two of the leading alternatives.

The Athletic report that Arsenal made contact with Raya and Brentford this month over a potential move, as their ‘ideal target’ for the window, but Brentford stood firm. It’ll be easier to complete a summer deal when his new release clause comes into effect.

Arsenal also looked into signing Woodman this month, but the goalkeeper’s situation was complicated by the fact he’s currently on loan to Swansea City.

Parent club Newcastle United had a recall clause, but Arsenal’s interest came too late for them to activate it, damaging any possibility of a move. Again, that situation will ‘be reassessed’ in the summer.

Raya and Woodman both bring the secondary benefit of being homegrown, though if Ryan performs well for the next six months he may be worth the non-homegrown spot in the squad.

The encouraging thing here is that it looks like Arsenal have a plan. Getting the goalkeeper situation sorted quickly and effectively at the start of the summer window would allow the club to focus on some of the other trickier business they’ll need to do.
