There’s no denying Southend United are in big trouble at the moment, sitting bottom of League Two. But Arsenal loanee James Olayinka briefly gave them a reason to be cheerful in their FA Cup tie on Saturday – before it ended in disappointment again.

The match was in familiar surroundings at Meadow Park, with Southend drawing Boreham Wood away. Olayinka has played at the ground plenty of times with the Arsenal u23s, but he was in the away dressing room this time around.

Despite playing against non-league opposition, Southend were 2-0 down by the 51st minute. They rallied to make it 2-2 in normal time but fell behind again early in extra time.

With his team facing elimination, Olayinka made an interception in the Southend half. He carried the ball to the edge of the opposition penalty area, before faking a shot to beat one defender, touching the ball away from another and firing in from the edge of the box.

It was enough to send the game to penalties, and Olayinka stepped up first in the shootout to convert his. But his teammates let him down, missing two of the next four to lose the match.

The only positive for the Arsenal loanee is that there’s not much more he could do. You can watch the full highlights with commentary here, though they’ve cut out Olayinka’s penalty.
