Sport Bild (via Transfermarkt) report that Dominik Szoboszlai is close to completing a January move to Leipzig. He’ll reportedly cost €20m plus add-ons, as well as a sell-on clause. If true, he’d be the 18th player to move from Salzburg to Leipzig since 2012.

Szoboszlai is in great form with Salzburg, with five goals and nine assists in 13 matches this season. But there’s a sense he’s reaching the limit of what he can achieve there.

Salzburg look to be walking the league again, they’re dominating their cup fixtures, yet they’re rock bottom of their Champions League group. With Atletico Madrid three points clear and Bayern Munich eight points ahead, it looks unlikely they progress.

As a result, it really wouldn’t be a surprise to see Szoboszlai move on. The Champions League campaign is a large part of why he decided to stay this summer in the first place.

Last week, it started to look like he might choose to join Arsenal. The player’s agent confirmed interest from the North London club, and Fabrizio Romano suggested Szoboszlai is in love with the Premier League – adding that the Gunners were considering him.

But the Red Bull connection may prove decisive. Szoboszlai will be well aware of all the players making the same transfer before him, and he may see it as the logical next step up.
