Charles Watts reports that Lucas Torreira said his goodbyes to his Arsenal teammates at London Colney on Friday, ahead of his loan move to Atletico Madrid. Torreira then travelled to the Spanish capital for his medical and to finalise the transfer.

Torreira didn’t make it difficult to confirm that information, posting a picture of himself at a London airport on his Instagram story.

According to Spanish outlet COPE, Torreira will arrive on a loan basis with a purchase option of €18m plus €2m in bonuses. There’s no word yet on the value of his loan fee for the season.

Fabrizio Romano is fairly insistent the move won’t go through officially until Atletico sell a player. Hector Herrera and Thomas Lemar are the two players most likely to leave right now. But the fact that Torreira is travelling to Spain suggests that’s close now.

On the positive side for Arsenal, this frees up a non-homegrown spot and gets Torreira’s wages off the books. It also brings in a loan fee and makes it likely the club get another €18m next summer. The obvious negative is that it’s not a permanent sale.

If Arsenal can still get their summer business done anyway, that doesn’t matter. But if failing to sell Torreira permanently doesn’t leave enough money for purchases, that’s an issue.
