Bernd Leno has had a pretty good 24 hours, reminding the Arsenal fans why he was a Player of the Season nominee last year.

After Emi Martinez’s run at the end of the 2019/20 season, you could perhaps forgive some Arsenal fans with short memories forgetting how good Bernd Leno was before that. But he gave them all a reminder on Thursday night.

The runner-up in Arsenal’s Player of the Season award last campaign, Leno was in top form against Liverpool.

He made seven saves during the 90 minutes, including a couple of fantastic stops from van Dijk and Grujic, before keeping out two penalties in the shootout to win the tie. The Arsenal highlights package views more like a Leno save compilation:

Leno won the official Man of the Match award, and he also made WhoScored’s Team of the Round. After the game, he told the media he always felt he had the faith of the club, despite Martinez’s emergence.

“The club always gave me the feeling that I was No.1, I am the No.1 and I will be the No.1. That was always very good from the club,” Leno said. “My job is to prove it every week. I think I’ve done it again.”

The German national team certainly approved of the display, calling Leno up to their squad the next morning. The goalkeeper impressed in his last appearance for the team against Switzerland in September.

The Arsenal fans are all seemingly back on board with the 28-year-old as well. They just needed this display to show them again why he was number one in the first place.
