Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang withdrew from the Gabon squad for the current break with a sprained ankle, though he’s still in training with Arsenal.

RFI initially reported that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang would miss out on Gabon’s upcoming match against Benin. Head coach Patrice Neveu told the media Aubameyang suffered a small sprain against Sheffield United, with the Arsenal doctor requesting his withdrawal.

James Benge has also since confirmed Aubameyang withdrew from the squad with the sprain. However, the player took part in training with Arsenal on Wednesday.

The fact that both the Gabon coach and the English reports suggest it’s just a “small” sprain is encouraging. As is the fact that it’s not enough to keep him out of training.

A week or so away from competitive matches should help him recover in time for Manchester City. Mikel Arteta certainly needs his star goalscorer available and in form for that match.

In general, Aubameyang has an excellent injury record. In fact, Transfermarkt suggest he hasn’t missed a single Arsenal game with injury yet. The longer they can keep that going, the more smoothly the next three years of his contract will run.
