Sky Sports report that Arsenal hold an interest in Chelsea midfielder Jorginho this summer. Arteta is reportedly keen from his time with Manchester City, when the club almost signed the player. But Chelsea still see him as a key member in their side.

Sky do add that Jorginho is just one of Arsenal’s options, along with Atletico’s Thomas Partey and Lyon’s Houssem Aouar. It still seems like an extremely unrealistic one, though.

Jorginho plays for a rich rival, has a contract for three years and is a regular starter. He’d cost more than the normal market rate for a player of his ability and is very similar to a player Arsenal already have – Granit Xhaka.

As a Xhaka alternative, you could see Arsenal signing Jorginho. It would take some of the pressure off the 27-year-old and it’s always good to have options.

But there’s no way the Gunners can spend the kind of money Chelsea would want this window for a rotation player. If they’re spending big, it has to be on a starter to immediately improve the first-choice lineup.

Even if Chelsea only want what they paid for Jorginho, around £45m, Arsenal would be better off just spending that money on Partey.
