Arsenal are still in the race for both Rúnar Alex Rúnarsson and David Raya, as they look for their Emi Martinez replacement but Rúnarsson looks the more likely arrival of the pair.

UPDATE: 5 year deal: Rúnar Alex Rúnarsson to have Arsenal medical

The Telegraph report that Arsenal are still in for both Rúnar Alex Rúnarsson and David Raya at this stage, as Emi Martinez completes his move away to Aston Villa.

The Gunners have already held talks with Ligue 1 side Dijon over a £1.5m deal for Rúnarsson. Signing Raya would cost significantly more than that, considering Brentford don’t want to sell. But it’s still an option on the table right now.

Brentford don’t have any financial incentive to let Raya go, having already brought in £28m for Ollie Watkins.

Arsenal certainly plan to reinvest the Martinez money this summer, but we don’t yet know how. Perhaps they’ll end up spending a large portion of it on convincing Brentford to sell. Maybe they’ll complete the cheaper Rúnarsson deal instead and invest in midfield.

The supporters are keen to see either Houssem Aouar or Thomas Partey join (or both). Aouar would cost around €60m, whilst Atletico are only willing to sell Partey for his €50m release clause.

The point is that it’s difficult to see those deals coming off if Arsenal are also spending £20-30m on Raya. It looks like an either-or situation to me.
