Wales Online reported that Cardiff City were closing in on the loan signing of Jordi Osei-Tutu for the coming season. They took the 21-year-old in for a medical on Tuesday morning, as the deal edges closer to completion.

Arsenal announced his move on Tuesday afternoon.

Right-back was a key transfer priority for Cardiff this summer, particularly one who can affect the game in attacking areas. Osei-Tutu fits the bill, after his impressive performances further up the field last season.

The Arsenal academy product spent last year with VfL Bochum, initially joining as a defender. By the end of the campaign, he was playing right-wing, scoring four goals and assisting three in his final 11 matches.

Cardiff will play in the Championship this season, so it’s arguably a step up from German second-tier football. After their fifth-placed finish last campaign, the Bluebirds will be aiming for promotion.

Their season gets going next weekend on September 5th, when they travel away to Northampton Town for a League Cup game. Osei-Tutu should be ready for that first fixture.

It seems like a solid next step for the player. He made some good progress last season, but he’s not getting into the Arsenal first team with Hector Bellerin and Cedric Soares ahead of him, even if Ainsley Maitland-Niles leaves.

If he goes and impresses with Cardiff, however, it’s a different story. Another strong season could put him in the picture for Arsenal minutes in 2021/22.
