Alfredo Pedulla reported earlier in the month that Napoli were looking to sign two central defenders this summer, with Sokratis Papastathopoulos on their shortlist. Pedulla claimed there was a ‘good chance’ Sokratis would join regardless of the Gabriel Magalhaes deal.

Arsenal and Napoli were both competing for the Lille centre-back. Arsenal seem to have won that race but the Serie A side had been keen to take Sokratis as well as the Lille defender.

The latest reports now claim that Napoli will only bring in Sokratis should Koulibaly leave the club. He has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester City. That being said, it is also being claimed that he has the best chance of ending up at Napoli to replace their defender.

Arsenal will certainly take what they can get at this point for the Greek defender.

Sokratis only has a year left on his Arsenal deal and is very much out of favour with Mikel Arteta.

Any money the club can bring in for him is a bonus especially after his agent initially saying Sokratis would see out his contract before then asking Arsenal to release him for free.
