Arsenal are set to sign another young player on a free transfer, bringing in Jonathan Dinzeyi after his release from Tottenham Hotspur, according to a report.

The Athletic report that Arsenal will add to the u21 signings of Tim Akinola and George Lewis by bringing in another free transfer signing in Jonathan Dinzeyi of Tottenham Hotspur.

As with the other two, this is part of a club drive to pick up players in the 18-to-21 age group in low-cost deals to strengthen the u23s and potentially sell on for profit later. Alternatively, if any of them break out and end up in the senior side, even better.

There are two elements to the Dinzeyi deal. On the one hand, he’s probably the most well-established youth player of the three Arsenal are bringing in. Even if he didn’t feature too often this season, making six u23 appearances, he was still playing for a big-six club academy.

On the other side of things, he’s joining to play a position Arsenal already have too many players in.

Even with Zech Medley, Joseph Olowu and Konstantinos Mavropanos on loan, the academy still have Mark McGuinness, Daniel Ballard, Harry Clarke, Mazeed Ogungbo and Alex Kirk. Ben Sheaf can also play centre-back if he doesn’t leave for Coventry.

That’s before we even get into the multitude of senior centre-backs ahead of the academy group.

If the plan is to bring in Dinzeyi and loan out or sell one or two more of the above list, that might make more sense. Ballard could certainly use a loan after his 2019/20 move to Swindon Town ended very early with an injury.

For now, we’ll just have to assume Arsenal have a plan and welcome Dinzeyi over to the biggest club in North London.
