Unai Emery is apparently all lined up to take up the Villarreal job this summer as it seems he’s away back to La Liga.

According to a report in Superdeporte, Emery was all lined up to take over Santi Cazorla’s former club when their form rapidly turned around.
The talks between Emery and Villarreal took place during the pandemic lock down. The players, obviously hearing about them, decided to pull their finger out and play for their current coach, Javier Calleja.

They’ve won six games since football returned in Spain, losing only to Real Madrid, Barcelona and Real Sociedad. They’ve also qualified for the Europa League.
However, Calleja, the report continues, doesn’t know if he will continue on himself. ‘Emery is waiting,’ they write.
Superdeporte also state that AS believe there to be a pre-contract in place between Emery and Villarreal but they are unable to confirm or deny that claim.
“In any case,” Superdeporte conclude, “the reality is that talks have existed, Emery is waiting and looking forward to returning to LaLiga Santander and at La Cerámica, he likes the figure of the Hondarribia coach a lot.
“Even more after having talked about the possible future project for 2020/21.”
