An English club from the historical top-six recently outbid Napoli for Lille defender Gabriel Magalhaes, according to reports.

French outlet L’Equipe (via GFFN) claim an ‘unnamed English club that isn’t Everton’ recently outbid the €22m on the table from Napoli for Gabriel Magalhaes.

Alan Myers then added that he understands the club involved in the bid is historically a top-six club – clarifying that’s Premier League historically, not English football historically. The player is aware of the bid, but he hasn’t decided on his next club just yet.

There’s obviously no confirmation that this is Arsenal. But most fans are pointing out that it’s hard to think of another club people think of as part of the historical top-six, who aren’t in it now, and who are in the race for Gabriel.

There are plenty of links between Arsenal and Gabriel in the last few months. In May, media reports suggested the club were ready to make an offer. That didn’t lead to anything at the time, though, perhaps due to the delays on football’s return.

Now that we at least have some assurances that the rest of the season is going ahead, perhaps Arsenal could feel secure enough to make a bid. I’d still question where they’re finding the money at the moment, but it’s not impossible.

Gabriel is a 22-year-old left-footed centre-back who made 34 appearances for Lille this season. At the very least, he’s certainly likely to leave his current club this summer.
