Dayot Upamecano will extend his contract with RB Leipzig and stay with the club for the coming season, according to reports in Germany.
Sport Buzzer report that Dayot Upamecano will extend his contract with RB Leipzig. He doesn’t plan to run down his contract to leave for free, and will stay in Germany for at least one more season.
The German outlet also reports he may already have signed.
The player will still have a release clause, as he did in his previous deal. But it’s obviously a blow to any club hoping to snap him up on a free next summer.
Arsenal were reportedly one of the clubs who might consider that option.
The Gunners put in a substantial bid for Upamecano late last summer, so they’d presumably also hold an interest if they could bring him in for just a signing-on fee.
Instead, Upamecano will remain with Leipzig.
Perhaps this is for the best, given Arsenal will hope they’ll be a more appealing prospect next summer.
For now, it might be hard to convince Upamecano to drop down to Europa League football – if Mikel Arteta’s side even manage to make that.
At the moment, they don’t have any European football to offer anyone.
