Thomas Partey may or may not be close to signing a contract extension with Atletico Madrid, depending on which source you believe from the last 24 hours.

GhanaSoccerNet originally exclusively claimed Thomas Partey was close to an Atletico Madrid contract extension. The outlet wrote that he would ‘snub’ Arsenal with a bumper new deal to stay in Spain.

According to the report, Atletico were offering a contract worth double Partey’s current £65,000-a-week wages. It would also increase his release clause to £87.2m. The player himself decided he’d rather stay in Spain.

However, other sources weren’t quite so sure. Libertad Digital editor David Vinuesa Malbac writes Atletico haven’t made any new offer to the player since Partey turned down their last one weeks ago. They’re still waiting for his agreement.

The AFC Bell claim they’ve confirmed that the reports Partey is close to an improved contract are ‘baseless’.

To be honest, I have no idea which outlet to trust on this one. None of them would be my first-choice source for transfer news.

Maybe GhanaSoccerNet have links to the player through sources in his home country. Perhaps Libertad Digital have good sources in Madrid. Or we believe The AFC Bell, who were ahead of the curve on breaking Arsenal’s summer interest in Partey in the first place.

It’s all guesswork, really. As soon as a more reliable outlet provides an update on the situation, we’ll let you know.
