On Thursday, the Premier League posted their match official appointments for the upcoming midweek fixtures. Anthony Taylor will referee Arsenal’s match against Manchester City, with Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn as assistants.

Martin Atkinson will act as the fourth official, whilst Stuart Attwell and Stephen Child will cover VAR.

Arsenal have a mixed record with Taylor refereeing, winning 14 of 29 matches, whilst drawing 10 and losing five. His last league match refereeing the Gunners was the 2-2 draw with Watford, but he also took charge of the Leeds United win in the FA Cup.

In the recent big games, it’s a mixed bag. He refereed the Liverpool away defeat and gave Arsenal’s opponents a penalty that day, but it’s hard to argue David Luiz gave him much choice.

Taylor also refereed the Spurs away game last season, giving Lucas Torreira a completely ridiculous red card and incorrectly awarding a penalty after Harry Kane went down from an offside position.

In fairness, that was the assistant’s fault and Arsenal also had a penalty that day.

Before that was the 2-0 home win over Chelsea. Hard to complain about that. Overall, that’s one win, one draw and one defeat against big-six rivals since the start of 2018/19.

Taylor certainly doesn’t shy away from giving penalties against Arsenal, though. As well as those given to Spurs and Liverpool, he also awarded one to Brighton and Watford. That’s four of the last five league games.

Hoping for a different outcome away to Manchester City seems a bit foolish.
