FC Nürnberg posted on Twitter on Wednesday to confirm that Konstantinos Mavropanos returned to squad training this week. He only completed “parts” of the session, but it certainly increases his chances of featuring in their final game of the league season this weekend.

Nürnberg’s results in Mavropanos’ absence through a head injury were about as mixed as you can get. They beat Wehen Wiesbaden 6-0 to put themselves in a great position to avoid relegation, then lost to Stuttgart 6-0 to fall back into contention for the drop.

At the very least, they did manage to avoid automatic relegation. However, they’re two points above Karlsruher in the play-off spot with one game left.

Unfortunately, their goal difference is also now one worse than the team below them. A draw for Nürnberg and a win for Karlsruher will see Mavropanos’ temporary side drop into 16th.

Nürnberg face Holstein Kiel on Sunday, and they’ll hope to have Mavropanos available. If they do finish 16th, they may need to extend the centre-back’s loan, so he can play for them in the two-legged promotion-relegation play-off next month.

Hopefully, it doesn’t come to that. We’ll keep our fingers crossed Mavropanos can end the spell on a high with a clean sheet and a win.
