After starting one leg of the play-off semi-final and coming off the bench in the other, Arsenal loanee James Olayinka made the bench again for the final at Wembley on Monday.

Northampton Town faced Exeter City for the chance to achieve promotion to League One, and it all went pretty well for Olayinka’s side.

Northampton raced into a 2-0 lead in the first half, before Exeter’s Dean Moxey picked up a red card at the hour mark. Olayinka came on for the final 16 minutes, completing a few passes as they extended their lead to 4-0.

The 19-year-old was making just his fourth appearance for Northampton, thanks to an injury and coronavirus. The midfielder appeared in every game he was fit and available for after his January move. But that was only four games.

After the match, the Arsenal academy graduate enjoyed a stroll around the pitch carrying the play-off trophy.

Although this was far from a conventional loan spell, it’s still a positive experience for Olayinka overall. The manager was keen to give him minutes when he had the opportunity, even in the biggest games. Plus, a win at Wembley is always nice.

Perhaps the young midfielder will get another chance to go back to Northampton in League One next season.
