Trae Coyle, Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka and William Saliba are all on the latest longlist of Golden Boy nominees for 2020.
Tuttosport released their 100 nominees for the Golden Boy 2020 award this week, with Arsenal providing four players to the longlist.
William Saliba is currently on loan with Saint-Etienne, at least until the end of the month. He is still waiting on his Arsenal debut, but the club did sign him on a permanent deal last summer. The 19-year-old centre-back is one of the top young defensive talents around right now.
Bukayo Saka is a year younger at 18, with 33 senior appearances under his belt already. He is Arsenal’s top assister this season, reaching double figures in all competitions.
Gabriel Martinelli is also 18 and a first-team regular for Arsenal. He’s up to 26 appearances, scoring 10 goals and assisting four. His workrate on the pitch is unmatched, and he’s certainly making a bit impact for a debut season in England.
Trae Coyle is a bit more of a surprise inclusion, considering he hasn’t played a senior game. Though the u23 winger did recently make his debut in the friendly match against Brentford.
Coyle made 20 appearances for the u23s this season before academy football ended the campaign early. He scored three goals, assisted three and won a penalty or two.
Those stats at youth level don’t exactly scream ‘Golden Boy nomination’, but the people in charge of the longlist clearly liked the 19-year-old’s overall performances.
Check out this video of Coyle’s 2018/19 season for a taste of what he can do, as he helped the u18s win the u18 Premier League south last year.
Personally, I think Coyle is still searching for a bit of consistency, after bursting onto the youth scene at a very young age. He clearly has talent, and Mikel Arteta is taking note of that, but he also still has work to do to reach the level of many other nominees.
