Joe Willock and Calum Chambers both have a lot of good things to say about new teammate David Luiz, as he has a clear positive influence in the dressing room.

When David Luiz joined Arsenal, the transfer certainly drew a lot of attention, both positive and negative. Luiz is clearly winning over his new teammates, though, as evidenced by quotes from Joe Willock and Calum Chambers.

“The player I look up to most at Arsenal has to be David Luiz,” Willock admitted. “Not only is he an amazing player, he’s an amazing person as well. He’s like a mentor and a big brother to me.”

That’s high praise, particularly given Willock isn’t even a defender. It’s easy to answer questions about mentors or idols within the club by just naming a more experienced player in your position, as that’s what everyone expects you to say.

So it’s less surprising, but still noteworthy, that fellow defender Chambers also had such positive things to say.

“David has been brilliant, he has come in and no-one in the club has a bad word to say about him,” Chambers said.

“He is one of the nicest guys I have met, he talks to you, gives you advice and makes everyone feel like he is giving you his undivided attention.”

On the pitch, Luiz did seem a bit nervy at first. Whether it was adapting to a new system or a new club, he was far from error-free in Unai Emery’s backline.

That’s not to say he’s been perfect under Arteta. The red card against Chelsea springs to mind, albeit after a Mustafi mistake. But things are going better now, particularly in the strong run since that game.

Keep that up along with the positive influence off the field and he’ll make a good signing.
