Dr Erkut Sogut, the agent of Mesut Özil, says the German playmaker has no plans to cut short or extend his one-year contract with Arsenal at this time.

Agent Dr Erkut Sogut spoke to beIN SPORTS about the future of his client Mesut Özil this week, as he prepares to enter the final year of his contract.

The 31-year-old has a year left on his Arsenal contract, sparking rumours of an impending departure or extension. However, his agent suggests neither are very likely right now. Instead, Özil will see out next season and then make a decision on his future.

“Mesut has a one-year contract,” Sogut said (via Fanatik). “There will be no change in this regard. So what happens next, time will show. Mesut will be 32 years old and will have a few more years in his career. Mesut and his family will make a decision.”

As for the rumours linking Özil to Turkish club Fenerbahçe, Sogut was staying tight-lipped.

“I cannot speak about Mesut and Fenerbahçe,” he continued. “Because I have no right to speak on this matter according to the principle of confidentiality.”

It’s obviously still pretty unlikely Özil will end up with Fenerbahce. He’d need to significantly decrease his wage demands and probably waive a signing-on fee, given the financial impact even a portion of his current wages would have in the post-pandemic world.

Regardless of where he ends up, it seems he’ll spend the 2020/21 season with Arsenal. It’s not like this summer will be a great window for buying and selling anyway, so that’s no big surprise.
