James Olayinka could end up with the rather bizarre loan record of one appearance and one Man-of-the-Match award if the League Two season ends early.

Olayinka joined Northampton Town on loan in January, and it’s not exactly going to plan. Things started well as he promptly made his debut and won the official Man-of-the-Match award. However, it quickly became clear he was carrying an injury from the game.

Arsenal brought him back to London in a protective boot for further assessment and rehabilitation. Just over a month later, he was back in contention for match action again. Then came the total shutdown of English football.

Last week, League Two clubs voted to end the season early. Nothing is official just yet, with further talks planned. But it’s certainly starting to look like a possibility.

There is still a scenario in which Olayinka might get to play a few games for his loan club, even if the regular season ends early.

Northampton Town are actually in the final play-off place as things stand. So if the EFL decide to solely play those out to decide promotion, Olayinka might suddenly find himself playing the second senior game of his career in a play-off semi-final.

Whatever happens, this is about as far from a normal loan spell as you can get.
