L’Equipe (via GFFN) report that representatives for Pape Gueye will argue his contract with Watford FC isn’t legitimate on a number of grounds. They’re ready to take their appeal to FIFA if necessary to get out of the transfer.

Firstly, they claim he held his medical in June 2019, which goes against the 18-3 FIFA regulation on transfer of players. Secondly, he reportedly signed his Watford contract (as well as two other pre-contracts) before January 1st.

In order to sign a contract with a professional player, you need to inform the player’s current club in writing. You can also only conclude a pre-contract deal with another club if your contract expires within six months. Before January, that wasn’t the case.

Last month, Watford announced the signing of the midfielder – previously linked with a summer move to Arsenal. The English FA ratified the deal and English sources claim he is under contract. It seems things could all get very messy now though.

Personally, I’m looking forward to an extremely awkward signing interview if they fail to call the deal off.
