Arsenal won’t take part in the International Champions Cup again this year, as the competition is off due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The official International Champions Cup social media pages confirmed on Friday that with the “lack of clarity of when social distancing and shelter-in-place restrictions will be lifted”, as well as the changing football timetable, the tournament is “unfeasible”.

Arsenal played in the event last summer, facing Bayern Munich, Fiorentina and Real Madrid. They won the Bayern game late on through Eddie Nketiah. Then, the striker produced similar heroics in the 3-0 win over their Serie A opponents.

The Madrid game was a 2-2 draw, with Arsenal losing a 2-0 lead after a 40th-minute red card. The three results were enough to finish fourth of 12 teams overall.

These tournaments are a big money-spinner, as well as a chance for foreign fans to see their team live. Unfortunately, they won’t get that opportunity this year, and that’s no surprise.

It’s mid-April now, and Arsenal still have 10 league games and up to three FA Cup matches left to play this season. It’s unlikely there’ll be a long break after that before the new season returns. Jetting off around the world is a luxury clubs don’t have this year.
