Huddersfield boss Danny Cowley says Emile Smith Rowe was tiring and feeling his back in the latter stages of the Charlton game, but it wasn’t a serious injury.

Smith Rowe made another start for Huddersfield Town against Charlton on Saturday, but some Arsenal fans began to worry when news of a possible injury came out of the match.

Before that, the midfielder was playing very well. His pass accuracy was over 90% as he created three chances, including one ‘big chance’. The 19-year-old also had four shots, completed a couple of dribbles, won 75% of his duels and a free-kick.

Unfortunately, Smith Rowe had to come off in the 70th minute, with suggestions of an injury. After the match, Danny Cowley addressed those fears.

“He was just feeling his back,” Cowley said. “We had to be a little bit disciplined with him last Saturday but he was able to play Tuesday night and play ever so well and I thought some of his play against Charlton was excellent.

“We’re always going to want more from him so there’s definitely things he can add to his end product.

“But no, he just was tiring and feeling his back a little but it’s pretty low level. We’ll freshen him up now and get him ready for the Leeds game.”

The Leeds game in question is next Saturday, so clearly they aren’t expecting a long absence. It’s a shame the loanee couldn’t complete the 90 minutes, but his team won 4-0 anyway. They’re now five points and five places clear of the relegation zone.

The Leeds game is a huge test, now the promotion hopefuls are back in form. They’ve won all four of their last league fixtures. Cowley will certainly want Smith Rowe available for the clash.
