Mavropanos had a difficult loan debut as promotion-chasers Hamburg thrashed his new side 4-1. Thankfully, he had the opportunity to make amends in his first start at home on Sunday.

The 22-year-old did just that, performing well in a 2-0 victory. He played a part in the opening goal, running on to a long clearance by a Sandhausen defender to play the ball first time to a teammate. The subsequent cross assisted the goal.

Mavropanos also made nine clearances, blocked two shots, made three interceptions and two tackles in a very busy game defensively. He completed 80% of his passes including six of 10 long balls.

The only drawbacks were he missed a good chance to open his goalscoring account with Nürnberg, and he only won eight of his 14 individual duels. That’s not a terrible record by any means, but he has the physicality to improve it.

Mavropanos also won WhoScored’s Man of the Match award, with an 8.2 rating. Overall, an encouraging display for his first home game after the disappointing away debut. Let’s hope for more of these.

Mavropanos joined Nürnberg on loan in January, in a deal lasting until the end of the season. His next game is against VfL Osnabruck on Saturday.
