Arsenal u18s faced Chelsea in the u18 Premier League on Saturday, and Sam Greenwood made his second appearance in two days for the academy.

The striker featured from the bench for the u23s on Friday, scoring Arsenal’s first goal in the 80th minute to spark a two-goal comeback for 2-2 against league leaders Derby County. Funnily enough, he ended up repeating the trick for the u18s.

The game followed an eerily similar pattern. Arsenal lost a centre-back to an injury in the first half (just as they did against Derby), with Alex Kirk going off in the 23rd minute. After that, Chelsea took a first-half lead.

Chelsea dominated most of the second half and doubled their lead. As a result, Arsenal reached the final 10 minutes needing two goals.

Again, just like against Derby, Sam Greenwood stepped up with a goal. This time, he curled in a free-kick to make it 2-1, one of many direct set-pieces he’s scored for the academy.

Luke Plange had a chance to make it 2-2, but couldn’t find the target with a header. Then, Matthew Dennis scored the equaliser with the help of a deflection. Just as Matt Smith’s shot was turned into the net by a Derby defender the previous day.

Twice in two days, the youth teams came from 2-0 down to draw against the league leaders despite a defensive injury, with Sam Greenwood scoring in the 80th minute on both occasions before an unfortunate deflection draws them level. Bizarre.

Petr Cech was in attendance to watch his old clubs face each other at academy level.
