Mikel Arteta is the leading candidate for the Arsenal head coach job after the media obtained photos of Vinai Venkatesham and Huss Fahmy meeting him on Sunday night.

Sky Sports report that Manchester City are going to ask Mikel Arteta to clarify his future, following the publication of photos of two members of the Arsenal hierarchy leaving his house at 1:20am on Monday morning.

The report suggests Arsenal will appoint a new manager by the end of the month, and Arteta is now the leading candidate.

This is hardly the first mention of Arteta as one of the favourites for the job.

Goal reported last week that he’s a leading candidate. It seems Arsenal’s recruitment process is speeding up now with the team’s recent mixed form. The walkover by Manchester City at home this weekend surely didn’t help.

The BBC confirm that Arsenal held a meeting with Arteta after Sunday’s match. Fahmy and Venkatesham flew north after the game before holding a meeting in the north-west.

There’s no confirmation from the BBC that the former Gunner was offered the job. It’s possible the meeting was an interview ahead of a decision. The fact Arsenal’s contract negotiator was there does make Arteta seem like one of the favourites, at least.
