Jack Wilshere has suggested he’d like his first step after his playing career to be a job working in youth development.

Jack Wilshere currently plays for West Ham, having joined the club from Arsenal last summer. He’s struggling to hold down a place in their team though, making just 16 appearances and eight starts in 16 months with the Hammers.

As a result, the speculation around Wilshere’s future is building. Recent rumours suggest he might consider a transfer to the MLS, whilst in a recent interview with the Mirror, the 27-year-old already appeared to be thinking about his post-playing career plans.

“When I talk about what I want to do after my playing career, what interests me is the development of kids, more than management,” Wilshere said.

“I like coaching and giving advice to kids. It is rewarding. I know Steven Gerrard started working with Liverpool’s youth team, used that as a stepping stone and some players are different.

“Frank Lampard is at the top already. I see myself going into coaching kids, going into an academy and see if I enjoy it.

“There’s maybe a little less pressure working with kids where winning is not everything, your goal is to develop players, get them ready for the next step. That’s what interests me first, but then things change.”

Wilshere knows it’s going to take a while to get the qualifications required for coaching, confirming plans to speak to Gerrard and Lampard about the transition. It’s a good thing for him to get started now, regardless of when he plans to call time on his career.

With all the injury problems the former Gunner has faced though, you’d be forgiven for thinking that might be sooner rather than later.

When Wilshere does decide to move into coaching, Arsenal should be interested. The midfielder knows all about what it’s like to progress through the ranks in the club’s academy, and all the potential pitfalls and trials the youngsters will face.

You’d think any young player would want to hear from someone who’s been where they’ve been and made it to the top level of Premier League football.
